Settling Into Spring

May 11, 2023 by Catherine Doyle

Welcome to Life in Sutton Place, a weekly newsletter for people who live in Sutton Place - or plan to live in or visit New York.

In this Issue: We’re focusing on who believes change is a great thing, what entrepreneur started the Sutton Place neighborhood, how to delight your senses with art and design this weekend, and where to renew your energy under a canopy of trees in Sutton Place.

5 things to do

RESTAURANT

1. Enjoy a tête-à-tête: And unwind at the intimate café Deux Amis as you enjoy the warmer weather and the feeling of being surrounded by fresh air and greenery. The friendly and authentic café - serving everything from salad frisée to steak frites - is a bit of Paris in Sutton Place.

📍Deux Amis, 356 East 51st Street

MUSEUM

2. Delight your senses: This weekend with modern and contemporary art and design objects at the TEFAF Art Fair presented by The European Fine Art Foundation at the historic Park Avenue Armory from May 12-16th. The fair, known for its quality, is an excellent opportunity to view the artwork from 91 dealers, including everyone from well-known galleries such as Gagosian and David Zwirner to Karma.

📍TEFAF, 643 Park Avenue

ARCHITECTURE

3. Savor life in Sutton Place: Thanks to the return of green trees that compliment the colorful architecture of Sutton Place.

The townhouses between 57th and 58th Street are how Sutton Place started. In 1875 Effingham B. Sutton, an entrepreneur, purchased the land to develop the charming townhouses that now give Sutton Place its unique character.

NATURE

4. Renew your energy: In the green spaces that have thankfully returned to Sutton Place. Take a relaxing walk through the parks of Sutton Place or enjoy reading a book under the canopy of trees.

📍 Sutton Place Park, 57th and Sutton Place

PEOPLE

5. Flow with the changes of life:

I used to think that each phase of life was the end. But now that my view on life is more or less fixed, I believe that change is a great thing. In fact, it’s the only real absolute in the world.
— Philip Johnson, architect and former Sutton Place resident
